The title of this post was basically our reaction upon viewing the Luichiny Women's Riley Sandals on Endless.com. They are thong sandals that look like boots! Who would have thunk you could have all the benefits of boots and sandals at the same time. You can show off your pedicure, let your feet feel the breeze, and enjoy the look of a well- heeled boot. :-) Endless seems to have exhausted their inventory of sandals but the combination of low prices, fashionable styles, and free Overnight Shipping (yikes!) was bound to do that to them eventually. I bought a pair of sandals (Adidas) earlier in the season before the rush to buy sandals had really begun and received my pair the very next day looking exactly as they appeared on the website. I even considered buying another color! BTW, you can buy these on Zappos as well.

Many of us are on a tighter budget these days with the bevy of economic woes facing us. Perhaps you have thought you might have to surrender your disposable income, once spent on boots, to feeding your car...but what if you could be healthier, save on gas, and look fashionable all at once? Back in the winter when we had to stop posting, one reader asked where to find a sweater wedge boot. These are available from many retailers but we would suggest that you search for sweater boots and many of these will be wedge boots whether they say so or not. To start your search, you might try these sweater wedge boots from Zappo. They're cute and have a classic feel of boots that will remain in style for many seasons yet.

I don't know about you but it's hot where we are....summer hot. As in, my tanktop was sticking to my back this afternoon. So can you wear boots in the summer? Sure. We suggest you stick with ankle boots or any boots that really know how to breathe. Try a pair of these supercute boots:

It all depends how hot it is where you are. Maybe you can get away with these last two pairs which aren't exactly cool....or maybe you like something more along the lines of the first pair shown above which with their mesh material will keep your feet very happy in hot weather. Just remember not to write off boots altogether just because it's summer. On the other hand, don't get us wrong. We love sandals and our next post might have to be about this fabulous footwear. :-)

If you haven't noticed, flats have been very in recently. Girls (and Women) everywhere are realizing that they can have it all, style and healthy feet. Add to the enthusiasm for flats, this season's ankle boot trend and you've just designed our pick of the week. Just one of many choices available...it's easily representative of both the style that is available sans heel and the built in comfort we have come to expect from all our shoes and boots, whether they are fashion boots or...garden boots. And, of course, we try and find boots that are relatively affordable for our woman of today. These boots barely even look in the direction of your money before walking home with you. So check them out while they are still available, the Mossimo® Gen Suede Flat Ankle Boots in Black available from Target for just 29.99 a pair.

And Magdelena, our most determined ethical shopper, is buying the first pair...they have a faux suede upper.

Of course, the nice thing about ankle boots/booties is that they kick ass when paired with a hot pair of pants. And sometimes it's hard finding a pair that fits right...Bice wanted to put in a plug for Aeropostales' skinny flare trousers. She just bought every color by mail (on sale for $20 each) and, though she is *cough* slightly over the 11-18 year-old target demographic, they all fit her perfectly. I can attest to that since I'm seen her in them...hot.

Okay, okay...I lied. These shoes are as craaaaazee as any. So, if you are looking for practical, this might not be your thing. On the other hand, maybe I'm still...pulling your shoe. What are we talking about? Nine West, baby. They have a very large selection of shoes for a wide range of sizes up to at least size 12. So, if you want the latest, hottest fashions, swing on over to the website. Among many other finds, we were excited about their lace-up bootie, Naso, which comes in a beautiful rich-brown suede (real? sorry, Magdelena) and has a killer heel to boot. For $109.00, we might just have to get in line for a pair, out for shipment at the end of the month. Remember, this season boot-tease is high(3 3/4") fashion.

Oh-my-gosh. We featured boots just like these recently on Bootsmania's Dailyboot section, I think it was. And of course, for looks like these, they cost some part of an arm and a leg. But no more. No more must we sell our very soles to adorn our feet in high fashion. Savior of the universe, Payless shoes, is carrying what are essentially the very same booties (Hassel Collar Bootine) for just 29.99 or (take deep breath)...get them on sale now for 24.99. Yikes! I'd say that's affordable beauty. Enjoy. I'll keep you posted as I look for more tres chic deals to send your way.

From Lands End, we have our first addition to the popular collection of Riding Boots being recommended this season. These stylish and practical boots go for $159.50. Now, stylish and practical may sound like two words too often bandied around when it comes to boots but riding boots really are a smart choice when it comes to buying an everyday pair. It's only our good fortune that these are also so 'in' right now and therefore there are many choices available to pick from. Below, we recommend another version of the riding boot for all those princesses out there for whom money is not an issue (at least not when it comes to buying shoes).

A very expensive but also very elegant choice From Anthropologie are the Well-Studied Boots, "Classic cowboys in a go-with-anything shade of brown sugar." Sizes range from 6 to 11 whole but we'll think twice before paying the price....$398.

I know. I know. You're still celebrating Christmas in July...but soon that shall all be over and the arrival of August should be a reminder to all of us to start preparing for fall. Because while boots in summer just isn't pretty (Summer is a time for removing as much apparel as you can legally get away with and that means either bare feet or sandals/flip-flops), boots in the Fall are a given...more than a given, by the time Fall comes around your feet will be begging for boots...listen to them. Several of the staff here seem to have another great love in addition to boots...no, we don't mean men necessarily, although they are sometimes nice too. No, we're thinking of knitting! With just two sticks, some string, and an internet connection, you too can start making your own designs for mukluks, baby booties, and other warm things. To Boot, Stand Up Already!

Do you have a closet full of lazy boots? You know the type...they lay around all day, all over the floor, taking up room that could be used to walk in or for other shoes. If only they would show a little backbone! Well, there is a solution for the slouchy boots gathering dust whenever they land for the day. The solution? Boot-trees. Give them a good squeeze, stick these babies in your boots, and watch them rise. Well, they won't exactly rise, but they will stand and deliver. Deliver space to your closet floor.

Of course, not all of these sweet little devices work so sweetly. But the idea is that the boottrees hold open your boots with spring-loaded force, keeping them erect until being removed. Some of the problems with these: Does the tree fit within the circumference of your particular size boots? Generally speaking, we haven't found this to be a problem as the spring is designed to be used in any size boot, depending on how much you squeeze. Which brings us to the next common concern with boot trees, can you squeeze the spring closed long enough to get the tree to the bottom of your boot? Well, this has to do with both the strength of your hands (ever seen those squeezy arm exercise thingies?) and the design of your boot, and the design of the tree. If compressing the top of said tree will keep the whole device closed and the tree is long enough for your boots (you can get different lengths) then that tree should be able to reach all the way down to your sole (or soul). Vegetarian Boots

In the olden days - you know which ones I'm talking about, right? - when Adam and Eve's descendants were mucking around in the wilderness and braving bitter ice ages, when there was no fruit (forbidden or otherwise) and, when you pee'd, it froze to your bottom...ok, maybe too much information but it was in that day when hunters would bring back meat to sustain their clans and animal skins to warm them. There was no cotton then, no nylon or other synthetic fabrics. If they wanted to survive, they had to kill and wear animals.

Nowadays, thanks to natural and unnatural climate change (read: global warming), few of us live in places cold enough to warrant wearing bearskins. As a matter of fact, we don't even need the skins of cows to maintain the stylish lifestyles we expect. It turns out that the wide variety of alternative fabric choices available for producing both apparel and footwear makes this "udderly" passe. Todays man and woman-made fabrics will outwear any leather, come in equivalent tones and textures to leather, and are often even waterproof (without being treated).

But why look for these when there are lots of shoe choices in leather? First, it never hurts to save money. It's just cheaper to make these new fabrics than to raise, kill, and skin a cow before going through the complicating leather curing process. The savings from the elimination of this process are passed on to consumers, to you. If killing animals is against your ethics, then this is of course another very compelling reason to switch to "vegetarian" shoes. Also, synthetic materials are much easier to clean. No more leather cleaning solution or suede brush required. And finally, the aesthetic appeal and number available of these choices brings this to the fore of our minds.

What a Find for a Rainy Day!

These are so adorable! Hunter Royal Horticultural Society Women's Wellie Boot and On Your Feet Satra Women's Tall Rubber Boots are just two of the very aesthetically pleasing styles that I found today at Overstock.com. In the past, I have looked to sites like Overstock and Half.com for low prices on used books, music, and other odds and ends (even electronics sometimes). However, their apparel and shoes are worth noting as well. Items are always offered at a sigificant discount and, while their inventory is always limited to what discount merchandise they can get their hands on, there was still an entire page of different boot styles to choose from. So, consider looking for alternative retailers like these before buying from a department store or online behemouth. Overstock.com, by the way, says they will charge you a one-time shipping fee of 2.95 for all orders. Now I just need to choose a pair, which isn't so easy since they are all quite attractive.

Write in and tell us how you like the rainboots, which pair you think is best, etc...

Note: The key thing to know here is that you won't always find your size in the item you want at sites like overstock and half.com. So shopping there will involve more of a search...just keep the reward in mind: Finding that near perfect pair that won't fit either of your evil stepsisters but fits you just right.

Too good to be true?

We do like to mix things up and this won't be the first time we've posted about Zappos this month but we just had to let you know about their generous shipping policy. The very large online marketer of boots is offering what does sound almost too good to be true. They state on their site that they will not only cover the costs of initial delivery but also provide free return shipping for a up to a year after your purchase. Furthermore, they suggest that customers order several different styles and/or colors, try them for as much as 12 months, and then return the ones that don't suit them, at no extra charge! Ce n'est pas mal!

We have not ordered from them recently but when we do we'll be sure to let you know how it goes. With most online companies, our number 1 question would be, what happens if they go out of business (in what continues to be a very competitive online retail industry) before we get a chance to both return all those boots we were "trying out" and before we receive a complete refund for all purchases? However, with Zappos, the future is looking fairly stable, (as these things go) given that they do have a relatively good size piece of the online retail market for shoes and they are one of the first pure e-commerce retailers to be profitable.

However, if corporate scandals like *take deep breath*...Enron are any measure then size is no guarantee of security and, if you try this, do buy only as many pairs as you can afford to keep, even if you plan to return a few. That way, you don't get stuck with a nasty bill you weren't expecting in the case that everything doesn't turn out as planned.

A quick search reveals that boots represent a myriad of symbolic elements in fiction and reflect our own diverse feelings about them. In erotic novels, boots are used to represent both the sexual costumes of the stereotypical prostitute and as the footwear of the domineering military officer. The power embodied by the latter characters is consistent with a history that has spawned a collection of (non-erotic) literature involving boots as primary elements including such novels as Somebody in Boots, written in the Great Depression. From Amazon's website:

The "Boots" of the title is a symbol of the men most feared by Cass and his ilk: the railroad bull, the jailer, the cop...Boots are used as weapons and are the mark of authority.

A Short History of High Heels

High heels are now almost exclusively in the domain of women's footwear. However, historians are familiar with the origin of this much maligned and controversial type of shoe, as men's wear.

The popularity of high-heels does, in fact, have some regal origin, having been worn early on by many members of the french Valois Dynasty in the 1500s. This first began when the 'not too tall' Catherine de Medici, wife of King Henry the II, designed herself a pair, perhaps to better compete with the King's favorite and significantly taller mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Men and women in her court later adopted similar styles.

Cowboy boots are a prime example of men's high heels, which continue to be popular (in some crowds) today, though for very different reasons than originally intended. Cowboy boots were originally designed to allow cattle ranchers/cowboys to ride saddled horses for long periods, planting their boots into the stirrups. Now cowboy boots are more of a fashion statement and most who wear them are not riding horses for long periods of time, if any. However, that part of the design: the heel, remains largely unmodified despite, perhaps, some lack of ease in walking in them.

When purchasing your own cowboy or cowgirl boots, look for good arch support, something might still fit your feet well after a long day's walking...or get a pair largely for style and wear them only on special occasions when you'll be sitting a lot. The giant online shoe retailer, Zappos, does give you some survey results regarding arch support and whether the shoe felt "true to width". This could all be very useful data although it's worth noting that the percents are, like all online polls, entirely dependent on who bothered to not only view the item online but vote. They sent me a catalog, largely full of a bunch of flamboyant 80s clothing styles of the kind that I worked hard to stay away from inheriting as hand-me downs growing up. The boots though! What a nice selection and the sizes available fit our standard/promise to you to focus on boots available for a wide range of sizes, most styles are available in women's sizes up to 11.

The Boots/The Dream -

Clearly, these are not riding boots but they do evoke images of the fairytale western frontier in all its dusty but otherwise "clean" glory.

The protagonist of our story is the damsel, impeccably dressed in a velvet jacket with a cinched waist, her shirt ruffles delicately encircling her long neck and poking out from the cuffs of her sleeves. She steps confidently to the side of her loyal black horse, standing her ground firmly balanced in the tall lace-up boots that end somewhere sight unseen under her layered skirts, a maddening tease for the smirking villain who stands before her but will never have her. In these 3 1/4" heels, she may not be able to outrun him without her horse, but she stands just under 6 feet tall, starting directly into his bloodshot eyes. It is her eyes, however, that reflect genuine rage. "Rossi" Platform Bootie

Okay, I just got off the phone with Bice (who is now on holiday) and she thinks I am really silly to want to post about this. However, surely there are still people who haven't been to Payless or have forgotten about the potential of the store. If you are vegan/vegetarian, Payless has incredible appeal because of their wide selection of shoes (and boots) made of manmade material. However, more than the variety of boots and boot sizes (and nice website), they're particularly known for their really nice prices.

This is a great platform boot to wear with short pants (capris, etc) and a belted tunic, an outfit I recently spotted the "ridiculously beautiful" Tawny Cypress in on an episode of Heroes (she plays Simone Devereaux and I admit I can't get enought of the shoe, um...show, but we digress... This pair has 4-inch heels of the chunky kind that you won't twist your ankle in. :-)

Jeans bring rebellious practicality to Chanel's couture

This from AFP on why sweater boots look so hot (the most asked question when we wore them...in hushed tones or asked outright, "How high do they go?":

"From their washed-out thigh-high tops, right down to the bejewelled high heels, Karl Lagerfeld's couture 'jeans' boots seemed to rebel against Chanel's sleek mini dresses."

PARIS (AFP) - Even a sweet, capped-sleeved 'Little Black Dress' sprinkled with a modern version of Coco Chanel's favourite camellias was teamed with high boots that looked like jeans -- as well as long denim gloves.

"The attitude is stronger like this," the veteran German designer said after Thursday's catwalk show, adding: "It would be too simple to put a pair of jeans under a dress."

Dressed in demure black with a jazzy metallic collar and Chanel sunglasses, the arrival of Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue, due to resume her "Showgirl" tour later this year after breast cancer surgery, prompted a mad flurry of camera flashes.

Her Rhodesian Ridgeback dog, Sheeba, caused almost as much fuss.

British rocker Elton John who attended Dior men's show earlier in the week also sat up-front at Chanel, one of the most eagerly-anticipated shows on the three-day autumn-winter 2006-07 haute couture calendar.

After opting to showcase last season's collection in the vast 19th century Grand Palais amply illuminated by its huge glass ceiling, the iconic fashion house this time turned to a kind of big top on the edge of a Paris forest.

But the circus tent was immaculate white, bathed in light from the summer sun and almost blindingly bright, as models took to the circled runway around the edge, in front of an audience seated facing outwards.

At the end, it was the guests who were slowly spinned.

Layering was again key to the Chanel look. When boots were not jeans they were black to give the impression of loose leggings, bringing strong contrast to the rich fabrics and jewel details.

Lagerfeld kept his silhouette either starkly straight, clean and angular, or gently puffed, but always short for skirts, coats and dresses, whose sleeves were either cutely capped or cut to the elbow over long gloves.

"The high gloves are the boots of the arms," the pony-tailed designer quipped.

A neat black coat with shiny trim embodied young modernity for practical day wear, while rich embroidery or colourful jewels punctuated the waist or shoulders on dressy short and long frocks.

For a 1960s bridal look, Lagerfeld edged a long-sleeved white tunic with tone-on-tone stones, over white boots to mid-thigh and a veil, in further affirmation of the themes of this collection.

France's Christian Lacroix will unveil his collection later Thursday.

Snow? What's That?

Some of us are experiencing some real weather this year. All too real weather if you ask my good neighbors here in New Mexico, still digging out from that freak blizzard. Sure, we get that it's supposed to snow...it's winter. But 15 feet snow drifts is just plain scary. And digging out? Just the bane of my existence. But my feet (and thus the rest of me as well) were pretty warm thanks to my new Shearling Boots from Lands End. They weren't the cheapest boots in the universe ($121.99) but for a sturdy pair likely to last me for several several winters, through blizzard and shine, I was very pleased with my purchase. My toes were cozy but not suffocated, my legs the same. I looked at several other pairs of winter boots but was unhappy with either the materials used, which needed to be waterproof and very insulating, or with the style. A number of winter boots seem to sacrifice looks for warmth or vice versa. This pair had both and more importantly, as I was saying, they've become a real necessity this winter. These boots are the marriage of beauty and intelligence.

Bootlovers abound. And of course, celebs have been making regular use of these fashion ringers for decades, no...centuries. At the wonderful blog, Ruby Red Slipper: Exposing Celebrity Style For Less, they recently published a post on humanitarian screen siren Angelina Jolie's impeccable style in a long white trench and (you guessed it) a beautiful tall stilleto heeled pair of boots. Brad doesn't look bad either...

The website GoJane.com which has a mix of similarly attractive boots, is having an incredible sale right now, selling boots for prices as low as 9.99. We counted at least 106 different styles but there is one caveat. It's one we are somewhat reticent to reveal given our mission statement to write only about boots available for up to size 11 feet but hope is made up for by the significant price-savings. It's this: we browsed for sometime and could not find one of the 106 styles sold avaiilable in anything over size 10. However, there are many boots in size 10 (and below) available and perhaps, we hope, one of the many boots we did not get the chance to preview is in fact available in a size 11.

Wearing Boots in the Race to Space?

Former USSR military technology, these boots are made from titanium and aluminum and will propel you 17 kilometers per hour. I don't know about you, but I don't have a lot of boots that I can do that in...at least not without several cups of coffee. Their site has been "under construction" for sometime but perhaps we'll hear more about these soon, or maybe catch some fellow rocketmen and women zipping to work bootwise? ;-)

Thanks to my new baby, a sweet little Pocket PC I bought this summer, we're posting from Times Square tonight and wanted to wish all our readers a very Happy New Year! As you may have noticed, we've added a new hits counter to the site. We're honest gals, so we started it at zero. Therefore, naturally, the numbers are fairly low right now...but increasing rapidly thanks to our beautiful audience.

Speaking of beautiful, some of these performers are certainly sacrificing decency...ummm, *clearing throat*, I mean, warmth for sex appeal in some very slinky numbers (see Rihanna's sequined minidress). Didn't anyone tell them that they could be both sexy and warm in some hot over the knee boots? We're waiting to see Christina Aguilera. She knows how to wear boots so maybe her legs will be properly/warmly coiffed. Oh, wait... K.T. Tunstall is singing Black Horse and a Cherry Tree and, of course, wearing a sizzling pair of brown cowgirl boots! Have fun gals, I'm going to go dance (and find someone to kiss)! Ladies, here is a fashion tip to take you into the new year and beyond. It isn't every girl who has the wherewithall to buy a new pair of shoes each week. However, wouldn't we all like to have a fresh look as often? Afterall, noone wants to be seen in the same clothes two days in a row and our shoes/boots should be no exception. So what are we getting at? Jewelry...or rather shewelry. There's actually a site by that name, shewelry.com that sells accessories for your shoes. Feeling like a naughty girl today? Try the chain photographed here. They've also got jewelry for the rich girl, royal girl, spice girl, and more. So, mix it up a little.

On a similar note, why wait for your order to come in from shewelry when you have the means to "kick" those boots up a notch, right in your closet? Got a long scarf? Wrap it several times (or however many times it will go) around your right or left boot (political commentary?) and pin or tie it elegantly together in the back. Voila, a hot new look for your boots...people will be asking you where you got them from. You can, of course, do the same thing with any long necklace you might have on hand (and Phillipa says she also wears her long ones as anklets every summer), by wrapping it once or twice around the ankle of your boot and fastening it. This turns out to be a great way to use that old costume jewelry Grannie had in a chest in the attic. You may not have occassion to wear long chains of faux pearls everyday, but they might just look fabulous with your tall black sweater boots.

The Low-Down

The weather in Western New England right now, as some of you have experienced, is extremely mild for Late December. We are expecting to stay in the upper 40s, low 50s through Christmas and perhaps even on into the New Year. It's that in between weather when young teens assume they can get away with summer t-shirts, camisoles, and short skirts and it's often colder inside than it is outside. In this kind of weather, the right accessories make all the difference. A lovely embroidered shawl thrown over the shoulders and a warm pair of boots mean you are both beautiful and smart, a trendsetter completely prepared for the occasional chill.

Coming up in the new year, we'll review how some of the boots we have raved over at Boots Mania in 2006 have performed in field tests in the categories of comfort, warmth, popularity (measured by the number of compliments received by wearers), durability/ease of care (who wants to worry about whether their suede boots with the white fleece-tops still look as pristine as the day they bought them?), and of course sexiness.

So, those riding boots reviewed in the last post got us thinking about expensive shoes and wondering which were the most expensive of all. It turns out that Forbes ran an article on this, less than one year ago, where they revealed that these alligator boots by Manolo Blahnik were likely some of the most expensive with which to coif your legs. While there are also several other fascinating pairs of shoes at 4000 or even 8000 dollars, these Manolo Blahniks will lighten your pockets by a smooth 14,000 dollars. Come on, you know that money is just burning holes in your pockets... ;-) And the alligator (or cow actually) is dying for you to wear these too...

Is it wrong to buy a pair of boots if you don't love them unquestioningly? Well the department of boot services hasn't dropped by yet and I do promise to treat these babies lovingly nevertheless. But I really wanted these hot aviator boots in edgy biker chick black, like the they were meant to be, and will have to settle for a mature brown. Delias sold out of the black and anyhow, I got these on clearance so it isn't right to complain I'm sure.

Sydney Boots are those moccasin type hotties that hug your legs all the way up to the knees and cost a pretty penny when you go hunting in the wrong quarters. It's all about searching for that hot deal that makes the difference between getting one pair out of your boots allowance this month or getting two, maybe even three. Can you tell the difference between the Minnetonka Moccasins from Amazon for $57.97 and the Sydney boots from Delias for $19.99? Neither can "eye." So while both are affordable, I can't wait for my three pairs of boots from Delias to ship. More on those in the next posts.

Or so they say at Macy's...Not all of our reviewers are into the flashy go-go patent leather look. However, it has earned a space on this blog because I for one am preparing for a career in espionage and every girl spy needs a pair like these. Plus, with a 14 1/2 inch shaft, a shapely ankle, and a decent size heel, this is one boot that will do wonders for the legs. Unlike a lot of these tall boots, it comes in larger sizes too. So maybe these boots are uptight in a good way.

My Latest Pair: Suede Shearling Platform Boots

Yes, there is such a thing as unattractive boots. But these are not it. These are soft; have a natural coloration likely to go with several items in your wardrobe; and they have that sexy shearling tease in the back and a shearling cuff. They are lace-ups and laces are wonderful and quite hot themselves (one imagines someone bending over to do their boot laces). Even better for those of us who aim to be conscientious/compassionate shoppers, while the boots are genuine suede (the poor pigs), the shearling is faux. Also, it is a platform shoe which makes it more practical for regular daytime wear and yet gives you that lift you need and want. Note that Gap doesn't say how high the heel is but stay tuned and I'll do a little investigative reporting (measuring tape!) and let you know. Finally, if you are looking for an affordable boot that will bring you from work to wild evening, this is a winner. Retails at Gap for only $78.

This review refers to the Camel colored pair. The reviewer winced when she saw the buffalo brown alternative whose heel is not dyed to match the shaft.

This fun boots are from Delias but they aren't just for juniors. They are a warm and casual choice to wear with jeans or skirts, long and short. They come in three color choices (brown, green, black) and have a good 3 inch wedge heel. No animals died in the making of these beauties and you can't beat the price either. They retail at 75 originally and at the time of this printing are on sale for 63. Take out your credit card? The one question we have here at boots mania is, does this boot stay on your foot alright or does it have the weight of a boot with no supporting weight to the upper shaft? We've got a pair on the way and we'll let you know!
